Arts Derbyshire is supported by a team whose sole aim is to enrich the community through art and creativity. Although you may already have heard about and partaken in Arts Derbyshire projects, we would like to introduce you to the arts team behind Arts Derbyshire and learn about their work in their own words.
In this article, we get to know more about Matilda Rowland, who is our Project Assistant for Derbyshire Makes until late spring next year.
Matilda Rowland is a dance creative and artist based in the East Midlands. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Dance and Choreography from the University of Derby in 2022. Shortly after graduating, Matilda received Arts Council project funding to create, produce and tour a children’s dance theatre piece, Frocks, Socks, and the Orange Fox, through her company, East Lab Dance Company. The work toured libraries, community venues and schools across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire.
Alongside producing and performing, Matilda works as Early Years Lead for the CANVAS project at Derby Theatre, where she creates high-quality arts opportunities for children aged 0–5 and their grown-ups across Derby City. She is an Associate Artist with Live & Local and regularly leads creative dance workshops for a range of organisations, including Care to Dance, St Andrew’s SEN Academy and Ledger Dance Studios.
Matilda will be working on the Derbyshire Makes project, supporting the work of Operations Manager Hannah Barker.
