What’s on at Derby Museums this Summer 📣

Explore the new ancient Egypt exhibition Displaced: From the Nile to the Derwent with your family this summer at the Museum and Art Gallery. The show features over 80 objects and the remains of three mummified humans and explores why these collections are here in Derby and how they travelled all the way from North Africa.

Join facilitator led guided tours for families to discover some of the artefacts and stories from ancient and modern Egypt. Learn how the collections came to be in Derby and discuss what we can do to preserve their history.

Take inspiration from current exhibition Displaced: From the Nile to the Derwent and join facilitators to make your own body adornment and design an Egyptian inspired object. Or come along to create your very own silly still life inspired by the portraits you can find around the Museum.

Be inspired by The Derby Yaadaañ Archive to create your own portrait of how you live, work and play. Celebrate the national day of play at the Museum of Making and join the team to play, make and create. Explore shape, line and pattern and create your own surface design.

As the reimagined view of Pickford’s House takes shape, come along to the house to look at how families and children used to play, inspired by our collections. You can have a go at crafting your own rag rug design, or learn to make your own hand puppets.

You’re invited to an exciting new series of family workshops, ending in a Virtual Reality exhibition at the Museum of Making this September!  Animate workshops invite you to create art inspired by humankind and its complicated relationship with other creatures that share planet Earth. Workshops are taking place over the summer at the Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Making.

Try new family trails at all three Museums this summer. Learn about the art that made Derby by exploring the Museum of Making and start your journey as a maker of the future. Make connections between objects, people and place by following a trail around Displaced: From the Nile to the Derwent. The Pickford’s House Summer Trail will help you explore a reimagined view of the collections and history, encouraging conversations of home, family and community.

Join Derby Museums for a summer of making, creativity and play with the Holiday Activity and Food Programme. Young people will explore the museums amazing collections and exhibitions through working with staff, artists and makers to get creative.
