Bunting for Peace: From Make Do and Mend to Street Parties

Event details

This August, join us at Erewash Museum for Bunting for Peace — a joyful and reflective community art project marking VE and VJ Day.

Together, we’ll be creating 50 meters of bunting using vintage, reclaimed, and recycled fabrics in classic red, white and blue, inspired by the spirit of 1940s street parties and the enduring message of “Make Do and Mend.”

Through free, drop-in workshops, you’ll be invited to sew, reflect, and celebrate — exploring what peace, joy, and community mean to us today. Whether you’re an experienced stitcher or have never picked up a needle, there’s something for everyone:

  • Rag Bunting – No-sew, family-friendly fun

  • Embroidered Flags – Slow stitching, applique & guided creativity

Your contributions will be displayed at the Wartime Variety Show on Friday 29 August 2025 and a section of bunting will be featured in the Museum’s “From Gas Masks to Garden Parties” exhibition opening in September. The bunting will live on as a reusable symbol of creativity and community at future museum events.
