Event details

Victorian Shop Windows in Line and Wash

Saturday 30th November 2024 – The Art Room, Barlow, near Chesterfield  S18 7TE  £79

Take a trip down the High Street with your paints and join us for a fun and possibly festive-themed workshop, looking at the many variations on a theme of Victorian shop windows.  Learn to add lines, marks, textures and interest to your drawings, then add washes of colour to your own very personalised composition.

In this workshop we will look at using tinted paper, then use white gel pens, ink and gouache to add highlights that would otherwise be lost on white watercolour paper.  We will also try out some fun techniques including paint blowing, dribbling and splashing to add fun and a spontaneous flair to our work.

As we are approaching a certain time of year, you may wish to choose a festive theme for your window.  Baubles – candles – lamps and sparkle – using useful crib sheets, add Christmas jumble to your decorated window or maybe some street furniture, looking at ways to festoon and add interest to your chosen window.  With some optional pre-made templates to help us with any tricky areas, Hazel will start by explaining ways to use pen to invent a myriad of textures, then go on to add watercolours to complete your artwork.

If you are at all hesitant with your drawing skills, this workshop will offer methods to give you advantages to will help loosen up your style and improve the way you work.  Intially with a focus on mark making, we will look at ways to flatten perspective rather than struggling with any tricky angles.  Using images of shop windows from some of Britain’s villages and towns, we will each have produced at least two finished images before the day is over.

Pen and wash is the perfect method for drawing on location when you are out and about, so this workshop will help you next time you are out and about with your sketchbook and need a helping hand!  The pen, used along with watercolours can bring out both the difference in tones and atmosphere while keeping the detail of line .  This class is suitable for all abilities.
