What's on
In this workshop you will learn a variety of techniques for impasto oil painting and you will produce a painting to take home with you.
The reference for your painting will be an arrangement of objects that will be setup by artist Craig Longmuir within Gallery M.I. The theme for this workshop is ‘Hang On’, the arrangement of objects will be based around a hat stand with hats, coats, umbrellas, wellingtons and a dog lead, with the idea that the scenario will evoke an absent presence.
Craig will help you explore starting the painting with sketching the composition and considering how best to manage the objects on the surface. This could be sketched in charcoal or with thin oil paint.
You will then organise colours on your palette and use thick oil paint to add body to the painting. Craig will be teaching a range of techniques including: colour mixing both on the palette and the painting, using a palette knife creatively to remove paint and expressive mark making.
The workshop will conclude with addressing the difficult decision of ‘how do you know when to finish?’
All materials will be provided including: easels, painting surfaces, oil paint, palettes, brushes, palette knives, non toxic solvent and protective gloves if required.
Please bring a packed lunch with you and you may want to bring an apron.
Craig has been a secondary school Art teacher and Head of Department for over 30 years. He has helped to develop oil painting skills and confidence with several generations of Sheffield and Chesterfield people. He is also a very experienced oil painter and exhibiting artist. Craig has his plein air oil painted landscapes in private collections throughout the Uk and in Paris. He has exhibited as a member of the PDA in The Buxton Dome, Sheffield Galleries, the Harley Gallery and the Mall Galleries in London with the NEAC.
