Nature Machine, a new immersive installation created by Lincoln based creative duo Brew Projects, has opened at Level Centre in Rowsley.
It’s not the first time Brew Projects have worked with Level, during the summer of 2022 they were awarded a residency to develop their practice and test an interactive exhibition, the Fun Machine. The collective, which includes Beth Lambert and Laura Mabbutt, have built on this previous project and are continuing to create accessible experiences for audiences, including those with disabilities and those who experience social isolation.
Nature Machine celebrates the area’s biodiversity and local history and has been inspired by the artists’ trips to Derbyshire including their visits to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle. The exhibition is full of sensory experiences including artwork that visitors can touch as well as see and hear. The experience blends Brew Project’s background in craft and design with their experimental practice of working with digital technology.
Beth Lambert from Brew Projects said:
“Nature Machine was created to reflect the emotions, sights, sounds and smells that Brew experienced when walking around the Derbyshire countryside. Visiting sights like The Nine Ladies, we felt completely enclosed by nature, we crept along woodlands, traipsed up hills and around bends, loving the experience of listening to distant bird calls and seeing a forest floor covered in moss. Living in the centre of a small city these aren’t experiences we have often and so we savoured it, wanting to transmit similar feelings of curiosity, peace and wonder to our visitors whilst celebrating the folklore and social history of the area.”
Brew Projects will also be delivering a series of workshops with partner organisations including Peak Village and Bakewell Old House Museum. The workshops will be open to the public and everyone will have the chance to design their own artwork to be added to Nature Machine, creating collaborative artwork at Level which will grow as the exhibition continues.
Nature Machine is suitable for everyone including school groups and families. The installation is free to visit, but advance booking is advisable through the Level Centre website.
Nature Machine is showing at Level Centre until 1 September 2023. For more information visit: www.levelcentre.com/nature-machine
