It’s all in the Mix at LEVEL Centre

A new interactive installation, In the Mix, has opened at LEVEL Centre in Rowsley. Designed to be playful and collaborative, visitors use large glowing balls to trigger different sounds and create colour and shadows across the walls.

The installation was designed by LEVEL’s Artistic Associate Darius Powell, a digital artist and
producer from Derby. He has been creating work for exhibitions, theatres and museums for more than 15 years and specialises in Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Projection Mapping and Interactive Installations.

An advocate for digital inclusion, In the Mix demonstrates how Darius strives to find new ways of using technology to inspire and engage audiences. He says:

“In the Mix is about bringing people together in a shared experience. After the various
lockdowns and periods of self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, I wanted to create a
space for people to experience calm and joy in the company of others. As a Digital artist I
aspire to hide the tech and focus on creating an accessible user experience. With In The Mix I
chose larger coloured spheres for people to hold and hug, a glowing light in the darkness, to
easily move around the space and discover the hidden layers to work. Every experience is
different as each sphere projects different colours, music and shadows in the space,
allowing for collaboration and a chance to discover”.

The darkened room, soothing sounds and projected shadows are proving to be popular with
all visitors, but particularly those with additional and sensory needs. One visitor said:

“We came as a group ranging from 6 to 82 and all enjoyed it very much, we’ll be back!”

In the Mix is open Monday – Friday at LEVEL Centre, Old Station Close, Rowsley until 20 April 2022.

Entry is FREE but advance booking through the LEVEL Centre website is required.
