The Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir were privileged to sing at the wedding of the choir’s President, Jason Darnell, to Rachel Wass at York Minster on Saturday 14 May 2022 as part of a mass choir, consisting of the York based choir the ‘Ebor Singers’, which includes some members of the Minster choir; ‘Cantorum’ and talented choristers and friends drawn from other choirs that Jason has association with.
It was a day never to be forgotten in the history of the Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir who continue to have new experiences, even though they were formed as long ago as 1903.
The mass choir sang ‘God is gone up’ by Gerald Finzi at the beginning of the service and ‘Let all the world in every corner sing’ (Antiphon) by Ralph Vaughan Williams at the end of the ceremony. The service also included the rousing hymns ‘All creatures of our God and King’ and ‘Love divine, all loves excelling’ and ‘We pledge to one another’ to the tune of Thaxted. The Ebor Singers also sang a setting of ‘O love that will not let me go,’ composed by Jason.
It difficult to describe the wonderful sound of so many accomplished singers both in the choir and audience joined together in harmony, aided by the outstanding acoustics of York Minster. A once in a lifetime experience never to be forgotten!
The service was conducted by the Revd Canon Michael Smith, Acting Dean.
Benjamin Morris expertly played the newly restored Minster organ.
As everyone left the Minster, they were greeted to the sound of the Minster bells and the day continued at a reception held at the Poppleton Centre, York, where all family, friends and choirs and partners were invited.
Jason Darnell is the son of the Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir’s distinguished Musical Director, Linda Darnell.
The day was such a happy event to experience that the singing continued on the coach on the return journey home, not wanting the day to end.
