Now in its fifth year, over 4000 Derby school children in Years 2 & 3 voted on Tuesday for their favourite book from the three shortlisted books in this year’s Derby Children’s Picture Book Award.
This year 52 primary schools (90% of all the schools in the city and an increase on last year from 45 schools) took part and received copies of the three books to read in classes over the past few weeks. Voting day was Tuesday 28 May and the winner was announced at a special Zoom event for the schools on Thursday 30 May.
The winner was Human Town by Alan Durant and Anna Doherty, which has a strong message about the environment and extinction. The announcement of the winner was made by the author and illustrator, Karen Swann and Padmacandra, whose book The Tale of The Whale won in 2022.
The announcement was viewed by 80 classes – with around 2400 children and teachers logging in! The excitement was palpable – even on Zoom!
