BILL MCGUIRE TO HOST A FREE TALK AT THE WHITWORTH

The Whitworth, in partnership with Darley Dale Town Council, is pleased to announce that it is hosting ‘An Evening with Bill McGuire.’ The evening will be on Tuesday 27th September 2022 at 19:00. Tickets are free and available from www.thewhitworth.org.

Bill McGuire, a leading UK scientist, will launch his latest book Hothouse Earth at a free event at The Whitworth in Darley Dale on 27th September 2022. We inhabit a planet in peril and Bill McGuire’s book Hothouse Earth outlines an uncomfortable future, acknowledging that it is now practically impossible to keep this side of 1.5°C average warming. He explains the science behind the climate crisis and presents a blunt but authentic picture of the sort of world our children will grow old in, and our grandchildren grow up in; a world that we catch only glimpses of in today’s blistering heatwaves, calamitous wildfires and ruinous floods and droughts. Bleak though it is, the picture is one we must all face up to, if only to spur genuine action – even at this late stage – to stop a harrowing future becoming a truly cataclysmic one.

Bill is speaking about his book and he and others will also be speaking about what we can do to create a better future. “This is a call to arms” he says. Alan Long, Chair of the Whitworth Trust and Darley Dale Town Councillor said “we are delighted to be hosting Bill McGuire, a figure head in the climate emergency we are all facing. The Whitworth, a Charitable Trust, has four objectives. One of which is to ‘help people make greener choices. The priority of Darley Dale Town Council this year is to reduce our carbon footprint. As such, this is an event in a series, which has included a retrofitting event and an event around ‘Making Space for Nature.’ These events have all been free.“

Signed copies of his book will be available for £9.99
