  • More about the artists: Lewis Noble, renowned contemporary landscape painter, now also includes ceramics in his portfolio. Although his images are of the real, earthy landscapes, he attempts to find a path between representational and expressive painting to convey a landscape that is still happening. He tries to create work which stands in for the landscape itself, not frozen moments but paintings which contain the time it took to make them. Apart from Derbyshire landscapes his exhibition will also include coastal scenes and ‘canal reflections’ from Amsterdam. Ceramicist Mark Smith draws his inspiration from the sea, objects he discovered on the shoreline becomes part of the story he tells: ships, boats, and wrecks are the main fabric of his work, made from clay with the textures of metal and wood objects salvaged, press moulded, and patched together to produce his quirky and charming collection. Andrew Bird’s paintings conveys his love for the hustle and bustle of harbours and coastal life, as well as the rugged nature of the landscapes of Derbyshire and Cornwall. He explores the relationships between colour and contrasts as well as the interplay of forms and gestural mark-making. Elements within a painting are based on fleeting images, imagination and experiences, to capture a particular slice of time. Heather Duncan is both painter and ceramicist. Painting is the way she communicates her feelings or passions freely. Her pottery is her therapy. She approaches each new painting without preconceived ideas and starts with a spontaneous application of broad washes of colour randomly picked. Though abstract, her paintings are of real experiences in real landscapes, representing her own feelings. ;

  • Otherlings is an exhibition featuring work from Ang Bartram, Steve Baker, Huw Davies and Phil Basi, Paula McCloskey and Sam Vardy, Stephanie Rushton and Mally Mallinson, Craig Fisher and Christine Parker. The overarching theme of the artworks within the exhibition suggests something beyond the parameters of dominancy and its cultural representation. The work in many ways offers explicit or implicit ways to connect us to other perspectives, and experiences through different and often unseen and discussed encounters. It thus opens up new paradigms for debate, for how we might live with care and compassion and function with others, as part of a world shared by many. ;
