DISPLACED: FROM THE NILE TO THE DERWENT
Ever wondered why we are so fascinated with Egyptian mummies? Who were the people and why are they in our museums? Join Paris-based researcher Dr Angela Stienne for ‘First Fridays: Ancient Bodies, Contemporary Challenges‘ as she shares captivating stories and historical insights to take you on a journey from the Musée du Louvre to the British Museum, unraveling the complex history and ethics of Egyptian mummified bodies in museums.
This talk is inspired by summer exhibition Displaced: From the Nile to the Derwent, now open at the Museum and Art Gallery.
Derby Poetry Festival
This year’s Derby Poetry Festival brings together poetry and creative writing talent from across the UK. Derby Museums are excited to be hosting the Poetry Slam, The Noise We Make with John Tams and headline event: an Evening of Poetry and Performance with Roger Robinson, Mary Jean Chan, Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan and Jasmine Gardosi.
Dracula returns to Derby with a series of public workshops and events that connect Derby with the world’s most famous vampire. Dr Ann Featherstone discusses when Dracula Came to Derby and theatre company ‘Don’t Go into the Cellar’ present an original one-man show adapted from the great Bram Stoker Gothic novel, Dracula or The Undead: A Macabre Matinee. You are also invited to take part in the Workshop Development Day, were you’ll learn about the project, meet the team and share your own workshop ideas.
Join Dr Bendor Grosvenor for a celebration of Joseph Wright and the invention of British art. In the talk, the art historian will discuss his new book ‘The Invention of British Art’ – front and centre in this radical retelling of British art history is the role played by Enlightenment artist Joseph Wright of Derby.
The much-anticipated Derby CAMRA beer festival is back for 2024, in partnership with Derby Museums! The Derby CAMRA Heritage Beer Festival will take place at the Museum of Making from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th November. The festival will bring together over 130 real ales, alongside a selection of ciders, world beers and craft keg. Tickets go on sale in September.
Ever-popular Life Drawing Classes at the Museum and Art Gallery on the Wardwick celebrate all bodies and the human form. There are two sessions available at each class, making the bimonthly sessions suitable for both beginners and those with experience of life drawing.
