Artist profile
Laura Burrill: Community Arts practitioner & Textiles Artist
My work champions the power of textiles to help individuals and communities uncover, explore and document past and present narratives by preserving and creating tangible textile objects. In particular I enjoy creating large scale textile works which bring communities together.
In recent years, I have become interested in women’s historical use of embroidery as a subversive space of expression and the potential for this unassuming slow craft to act as a vehicle for positive change in a fast-paced world. My work focuses on process rather than outcome, creating textiles and embroideries which ask questions with a view to celebrating and empowering those in society who are often ignored or underrepresented, exploring politically sensitive narratives and documenting past and present stories.
