Artist profile

Emma Clinton – PhotoHaiku

I have been a keen photographer since my teens and early 20s when I lived and travelled widely in South East Asia using my father’s Nikon SLR to capture scenes in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. As part of my art studies, I learned dark room printing and printed my own images back in the 1980s. When I returned to live in my native Derbyshire in 2015 after living in Sheffield for many years, I picked up my passion for photography and have been working hard to improve my practice. I am a member of the Royal Photographic Society and have taken a course in photographing at heritage locations. In 2021 one of my images of Cwmorthin in North Wales was selected for the Welsh Tourism ‘Go North Wales’ calendar. I also have a keen interest in creative writing, particularly poetry, and have an MA in Creative Writing from Sheffield Hallam University. I often write haiku poetry to accompany my images, – these are posted on Instagram as PhotoHaiku – and this has become my signature name and business logo. I am always in flux and experimenting with what I create from my work. I love stationery and, as well as prints, I have created cards and note cards, and even handmade bookmarks using my images. I am part of the Committee of the CiC ‘The Cabin of Makers’ in Belper, where we sell and champion the work of local artists and makers.
