Naturally Connected Young People is a national programme to help 11-16 year-olds get closer to nature. The groups will receive support and delivery from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust estimated to be valued at £7000 but will be fully funded by The Prudence Trust.

Research published by Professor Miles Richardson et al. in 2019 found that our connection to nature drops sharply from the age of 11 and doesn’t recover until our 30s. For many, this connection never returns, leaving a huge proportion of society cut off from nature. Therefore, this project has been developed to target 11 – 16-year-olds who are new to nature and who have been underrepresented and underserved within wildlife communities.

The project will have a joint focus on nature connectedness and improving wellbeing for young people in order to improve self-esteem and confidence as well as encourage an ongoing desire to spend time outdoors. Sessions will take place with a member of Derbyshire Wildlife Staff wherever the group normally meet, whether that is their school grounds or a green space near the group’s meeting hub. We will be encouraging each group to undertake a qualification in Leading a Project for Positive Change (Level 2). The running of this Level 2 will be shaped and lead by the interests of the young people as we work with them to create activity plans and then deliver these activities within their community. I have attached the Learner Evidence Record which is everything the young people need to complete for the Level 2, and this will be done entirely during our sessions. Whilst achieving a Level 2 is our ideal, we are aware that some groups may find the level of work in this qualification prohibitive. As we do not want this to be a barrier to taking part, we have also created a bespoke Unit Award which can be awarded for participation in the activity planning and delivery to recognise achievement. The unit award is assessed against the same criteria as the Level 2 but will be assessed through tutor observation as opposed to written work from the young people.
