Derby’s new Museum of Making seeks new recruits for flagship attraction

Derby’s new Museum of Making will be opening to the public for the very first time in Spring 2021 and to make this exciting new visitor attraction even more exceptional, Derby Museums has launched a new recruitment campaign across the region to find people to join its Visitor Experience Team.

The roles available include a wide range of part time and flexible positions with permanent contracts.

On the site of the world’s first factory, the Silk Mill, the Museum is designed to inspire those who visit with new creativity, whilst showcasing Derby’s 300-year history of making and celebrating the area’s rich history of innovation. Designed and made by the people and industries of Derby, the Museum of Making will be a must-visit destination for those in the East Midlands and beyond.

That is why getting the right people on board is so important as new team members will have an exciting and pivotal role to play as they become the welcoming face of the new Museum.

Janine Derbyshire, Head of Visitor Experience at Derby Museums said, “We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic people to join our visitor experience and catering teams, along with an assistant site-manager, to help celebrate and share Derby’s inspirational story.

“For many of the roles you don’t need to have previous museum or visitor attraction experience. However, we are looking for bags of energy, enthusiasm and passion and we will make sure that new recruits have the very best training to deliver a world class visitor experience.

“The people of Derby have been central to creating the Museum of Making, so we are really pleased that we can bring new job opportunities to the region after a difficult year. We are keen that the Museum represents the diversity of our region and this is a great opportunity to get into a fulfilling and exciting new role, even if you thought working in a museum wasn’t for you.”

The Museum of Making is being developed and will be operated by Derby Museums with thanks to major grant funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Local Growth Fund by D2N2 the Local Enterprise Partnership and Derby City Council. Significant support has also been received from Rolls-Royce and a range of charitable trusts and foundations.

It’s great to see the progress of the project continuing apace, as we approach the opening in Spring 2021”.

In order to help potential applicants better understand the jobs on offer, and to get a flavour for what working at the Museum of Making might be like, Derby Museums is running a number of free Digital Introduction Days. Anyone interested in applying will be able to hear from current Museum staff who will be live online to talk about the roles and answer questions.

Digital Introduction Days for the Visitor Experience roles are on:

  • Tuesday 5 January at 2pm
  • Thursday 7 January at 7pm
  • Saturday 9 January at 11am

Digital Introduction Days for the Catering roles are on:

  • Tuesday 12 January at 2pm
  • Thursday 14 January at 7pm
  • Saturday 16 January at 11am

There will also be a stream of information available about the new Museum and the roles on Derby Museums’ social media channels over the next few weeks, with applications for roles closing towards the end of January 2021.
