Summer is in full swing and we’re getting lots of new visitors for the final few weeks of Nature Machine. The exhibition closes on Friday 1 September, so if you want to take a peek inside Brew Projects’ sensory experience there’s still time to book those free tickets before they all go!
Our Level Makes Performance group finished off the term with a wonderful showing to family and friends. The few months have been all things pirate, starting with a few interesting pirate names (say hello to Rum Swigging Roberta!), swashbuckling adventures and the odd rousing sea shanty. The visual art group have been working on a printing project around Being Happy With Who You Are. The work will culminate in a joint exhibition with Wirksworth-based CIC Little Canyon Collective over the autumn. We had a great response to our joint residency call out with Old Diorama Arts Centre. Parallel Perspectives will offer two performance artists a residency both in Derbyshire and London to see how different environments might influence their work. We’ll be sharing more about the successful artists over the next few weeks. Our very first GLISTEN Fest, a sensory festival for people with Profound Multiple Learning Disabilities is open from 19-23 September, and it’s going to be so much fun! As well as two digital light and sound pieces there’ll be a sensory space and a separate room for parents and carers to relax – there might even be a treat or two! We’d love GLISTEN Fest to become an annual event, and of course, that involves a spot of fundraising. We’re hoping to apply for match funding again this year through The Big Give Christmas Challenge. To start the process we need to secure £1000 in pledges of support to go through to the match funding stage. If you know of anyone, business or individual, who could pledge a minimum of £100, please share this link with them before 1 September. |
Children in Need core funding
In June we received the amazing news that we were successful in applying for core funds from BBC Children in Need. The grant will enable our Engagement & Project Coordinator to focus on strengthening and developing our network to reach more Children and Young People.
We’re Fantastic for Families!
We’ve signed up to the Family Arts Standards, which means that our events are designed so that all family members can enjoy a trip to Level together. We want your visit to be as stress-free and enjoyable as possible so we’ve created some information will help plan your trip.

Look at our lovely new signage!
Thanks to a local supporter we’ve been able to install new signage around the site including some internal graphics and additional Braille. Improving signage was a recommendation from the 2022 Visit Peak District & Derbyshire Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Awards, so it’s great to be able to tick this one off before this year’s application is submitted!

GLISTEN Fest
Tues 19 – Sat 23 September 2023
Five days of sparkly, sensory fun for people with profound multiple learning disabilities. Our first GLISTEN Fest has been designed to spark creativity and create memories that can be shared with family, friends and carers.
There will be different digital experiences depending when you visit, the perfect excuse to come more than once! Plus there’s a quiet sensory room if anyone needs a break from the action and space for parents and carers to unwind.
GLISTEN Fest has been made possible with support from Big Give Christmas Challenge supporters, the People’s Postcode Lottery and Derbyshire Freemasons.

A Necklace of Stars
During the pandemic, older people in Derbyshire joined together to make A Necklace of Stars. The wonderful embroideries, poems and lullabies are now touring the county and are coming to Level in September. The project celebrates childhood and the night sky in words, song and stitches and is a testimony to the power of human connection and creativity in the face of lockdowns and isolation. The exhibition features a quilt of embroidered stars alongside a catalogue of poems and lullabies. |
