“The arts are being systematically undermined and devalued and incompetently treated. That’s where we are. That’s the sort of country we are at the moment. And it’s a disgrace.”
Responding to Campaign for the Arts’ newly-published report with the University of Warwick, The State of the Arts, Lord Melvyn Bragg has called on the UK to change course as a matter of urgency.
Watch his message here:
Lord Bragg, the nation’s preeminent arts broadcaster, also calls for support of the Campaign for the Arts in his new feature-length documentary Art Matters, aired last Wednesday at 8 pm.
In the documentary, Lord Bragg makes a rousing case for why the arts matter, not just in his life, but in the lives of everyone in the nation. Hear extraordinary stories from artists including Tracey Emin and Antony Gormley, the actors Maxine Peake and Lenny Henry, the poet Lemn Sissay, the filmmaker and comedian Armando Iannucci, and the musician Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
Culminating in a passionate rallying cry, delivered in the House of Lords in February and championed by the Campaign for the Arts, this film is Melvyn’s urgent call to arms to defend the arts in their time of need.
It’s fantastic to have Melvyn and Sky Arts’ support of this Campaign. It will help Campaign for the Arts to reach many more people like you who share their belief that the arts matter, and that everybody should have opportunities to access and experience them.
