Derby Book Festival seeks volunteers to expand Shared Reading groups

Derby Book Festival is looking for passionate, community-minded volunteers to support its growing Community Programme – Shared Reading. In a world where reading is often a solitary activity, Shared Reading brings people together through the joy of literature and words – together.

Across Derby, this initiative is transforming lives by fostering connection, reducing loneliness, and supporting wellbeing. Run by Derby Book Festival since 2017, this National Lottery-funded programme offers residents a unique opportunity to experience literature aloud, as a group.

Every month, over 100 participants attend weekly Shared Reading groups held in a variety of community spaces – from cafés and libraries to mental health hospitals, carers’ groups, colleges, residential homes, and more. Sessions feature poems, short stories, flash fiction, quotes, and letters – bringing literature to life through shared experience.

The magic of Shared Reading lies in its simplicity: one person reads aloud while others listen. Afterwards, the group reflects together – sharing thoughts, emotions, memories and personal insights inspired by the words they’ve heard.

“Shared Reading is one of the highlights of my week. It improves my mood. I get to meet new people, explore ideas with them and see the world from different viewpoints all in a creative and supportive environment.” – Artcore Cafe Shared Reading Participant

As the programme continues to grow, the festival is looking for new volunteers to join their wonderful team and help lead Shared Reading groups across the city.

“Volunteers are at the heart of what we do – helping create spaces of warmth, connection, and magic for people of all ages and backgrounds. And the benefits go both ways: 100% of our volunteers say Shared Reading has improved their own wellbeing and strengthened their connection to the Derby community.” – Rose Braisby, Strategic Lead of Shared Reading.

“I get a huge sense of satisfaction at the end of a session, knowing I’ve made a difference. I feel appreciated and valued. Seeing readers grow in confidence and share their experiences, especially when they’re shy, is a real highlight for me.” – Shared Reading Volunteer

Whether you can give an hour a week or a couple of hours a month, Derby Book Festival would love to hear from you. No previous experience is needed – just enthusiasm, a love of reading, and a willingness to connect. Full Shared Reading training is provided.
