A beautiful film from Tibet that weaves the clash between tradition and modernity within a patriarchal community of farmers. Drolkar is the quiet and unassuming wife of Dargye. When Drolkar finds that she is pregnant again, tensions rise: she feels she should get an abortion but her husband believes that she is carrying the reincarnation of his recently dead father. Cleverly filmed and directed, Balloon is a poetic, funny, and deeply compassionate portrait of life in rural Tibet.
