What's on
Come with your friends and family and join the annual Derby Lantern Parade organised by Surtal Arts, ahead of the city’s Christmas Light Switch On with Derby Live. This year’s parade theme is ‘Heroes’ which reflects a key message behind DSOL of celebrating Heroes in your life…someone you look up to or something that inspires you. It can be anything or anyone – your family member, Spiderman, Superman….. Why not wear a special costume and carry your lantern and join us in the parade and celebrate Derby’s diversity, being with other community members and light up Derby city.
Starting at 5pm from St Peter’s Cross, participants who have attended one of the lantern making workshops will be joined by children, young people and families from local primary schools, Derby College and local community groups who will proudly parade through the streets with colourful lanterns that they have made. The Parade will be joined by our amazing drummers – Dhol Frequency, Bollywood Bhangra dancers from Surtal Arts, Derby College, Hovela Ukrainian dance ensemble and Chinese dancers. The Parade will finish with a colourful performance of Drumming and Bollywood dance. There will be lots of other entertainment from Derby Live during the evening, please see Festive Derby for more details.
All welcome to join our Lantern Parade. Please bring your own lantern (please note no naked flame) or make one at one of our Lantern making workshops. We will also have spare lanterns on the day which we can borrow on the day and carry.
The event is supported by our Partner Derby Live, our funders Arts Council England, Derby City Council, Cosy Foundation and Foundation Derby. Thank you also to all our volunteers for their help.
