Haarlem Artspace is pleased to present Night Feed, an exhibition of new works by Nottingham-based artist Sophie Goodchild, developed during her residency at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, Cornwall.
Working from Studio 5, overlooking the Atlantic, Goodchild drew on sustained encounters with the coastline, walking, swimming and observing the changing landscape. Created during her second pregnancy, the works connect bodily transformation with an established practice exploring materiality, containment, layering and geological time.
The studio’s womb-like atmosphere at high tide, shaped by the sound and movement of the sea, informed the relationship between body and landscape. Its architecture is reflected in the panoramic scale of the works, while the layered strata and fissures of the West Penwith granite landscape provide a visual language for the felt panels. Goodchild works with wool, water, soap, pressure and repetition, transforming loose fibres into dense surfaces through a process in which the material itself becomes the image.
Recurring forms — eggs, vessels, shells, caverns and openings — suggest structures holding unseen life, energy and the potential for transformation. Linear markings move between geological divisions and the changing surface of the body, while the repetitive work of fishermen preparing their nets below the studios echoes Goodchild’s own gradual process of layering and manipulation. In Night Feed, these material and physical cycles resonate with the rhythms of tide, pregnancy, labour, feeding and making.
Occupying an uncertain space between painting and textile, abstraction and embodied experience, the works neither represent the landscape nor illustrate the body, but emerge through their continual interplay.
Goodchild has exhibited across the UK, including at Flowers Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Standpoint Gallery and Sid Motion Gallery. Her solo exhibitions include Flatland Projects, Bexhill, and Trafalgar Avenue, London. She has undertaken residencies and placements at Troy Town Art Pottery Residency, AA2A at Loughborough University and Backlit Gallery, Nottingham, where she received a Graduate Studio Award. She holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art and a BA in Fine Art from Kingston School of Art.
