Last chance to see Hogarth, half-term activities
and what’s happening at Derby Museums!

 

EXHIBITIONS

 

 

World-class exhibition Hogarth’s Britons: Succession, Patriotism and the Jacobite Rebellion at the Museum & Art Gallery is coming to an end on Sunday 4th June. This popular exhibition features many of Hogarth’s masterpieces with over 70 loaned works from organisations including the National GalleryNational Portrait GalleryFoundling Museum and more. Admission is free with an ask to ‘Give What You Think’.

MAY HALF-TERM

 

 

Take some time to notice nature this May half-term with Pickford’s Plot: Seed Bombs and the Nature Explorers Trail. Get crafty with Copper Foil Embossing or Create a Cameo inspired by the Hogarth’s Britons exhibition. Explore our workshop spaces, have a go at using traditional metal working tools and find out about the projects our team are currently working on at our Open Workshops event.

EVENTS

 

 

An exciting season of events begins with the Ethical Atelier sustainable market, an opportunity to explore and learn about sustainable fashion and ethical shopping. Derby University History students and Dr Ruth Larsen take a tongue in cheek look at the more humorous and satirical elements of the work of William Hogarth with Carry on Hogarth. Dr Panya Banjoko uses oral history testimonies to uncover the stories of the Windrush generation and their impact on the East Midlands with Windrush Stories: An Exploration of Migration and as part of Derby’s Refugee Week join us for a day of creativity, conversation and compassion with Hello Derby… A Festival of Welcome.

WORKSHOPS

 

 

Learn the skills to make your own beautiful gingham dress with sustainable textile artist Abigail Wastie who will guide you through the simple construction, sewing and fitting methods to create a bespoke gathered dress that is personalised to your measurements. Or join experienced metalworker Colin Joyce in the workshop for an Intro into Forging. Learn how to heat, cut and shape a mild steel bar to create your own bespoke piece.

LATEST NEWS

 

 

The Craft Skills for the Future programme delivered its first workshop in partnership with Heritage Crafts to encourage young people to think about craft as a career. Students were invited by established crafts practitioners to try rug-making and tapestry and to experiment with materials and techniques, to inspire them to become craft-makers.

Egyptologists from the British Museum visited the Ancient Egyptian collection to examine the inscriptions on the Painted Cartonnage Mummy to see if they can identify their name and discover more about the secrets of mummies. Watch this space…
