As part of Arts Council England’s recommendations from its 2021 Fair and Inclusive Music Research , a Midlands focused research project will investigate the challenges and opportunities people face within their music learning, taking into account age, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and personal circumstances. As part of the steering group bringing together a range of representatives from the Midlands music sector, I am supporting the appointed researchers at Birmingham City University in their further work.
Launching this week with a new survey focusing on the experience of young musicians in the Midlands, Birmingham City University’s research will test initiatives aimed at supporting those from a wide range of backgrounds who want to develop careers in music. Musicians over the age of 18, music teachers, music organisations and music practitioners from across the Midlands are all invited to respond. Young musicians can share their views with the team through a different survey in September.
Gathering responses from musicians, music teachers, and organisations right across the Midlands region is a vital stage to this work, giving richer insights into what is going on already. This new survey should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete and the research team want to hear from anyone working in music and music education in the Midlands, including freelance musicians, music teachers, classroom teachers, and music organisations. This survey will help the research team to better understand and represent fair and inclusive access to music across this important research. The deadline to complete the survey is the end of September 2022.
