The Ritz Cinema: Dementia Friendly film screenings in Belper

The Ritz Cinema in Belper has two Dementia Friendly, accessible film screenings coming up.

The lights will be left on low and you are free to talk, move around or sing along!

What films will be screening?

The King & I (U)

  • Screening: Wednesday 17th November
  • Running time: 128 minutes
  • Doors open: 1pm
  • Film starts: 1:30pm
  • Finish: 4pm
  • Director: Walter Lang. Starring: Yul Brynner, Deborah Kerr. US 1956.

Relaxed screenings with low level lighting and lower sound levels.

Mrs. Anna Leonowens and her son Louis arrive in Bangkok, where she has been contracted to teach English to the children of the royal household. She threatens to leave when the house she had been promised is not available, but falls in love with the children. A new slave, a gift of a vassal king, translates “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” into a Siamese ballet. After expressing her unhappiness at being with the King, the slave decides to make an attempt to escape with her lover. Anna and the King start to fall in love, but her headstrong upbringing inhibits her from joining his harem. She is just about to leave Siam but something important she finds out makes her think about changing her mind.

Meet Me in St. Louis (U)

  • Running time: 113 minutes

  • Film starts: 1:30pm
  • Finish: 3:45pm
  • Director: Vicente Minnelli. Starring: Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien. US 1944.

Relaxed screenings with low level lighting and lower sound levels.

Possibly the greatest Christmas film of all time. St. Louis 1903. The well-off Smith family has four beautiful daughters, including Esther and little Tootie. 17-year old Esther has fallen in love with the boy next door who has just moved in, John. He however barely notices her at first. The family is shocked when Mr. Smith reveals that he has been transfered to a nice position in New York, which means that the family has to leave St. Louis and the St. Louis Fair.

There will be a 15 minute interval. Tickets are £7.00 including free tea, coffee and biscuits and accompanying carers go free.

There will be time before the screening to socialise with other audience members to get to know the cinema and our Dementia Friends staff will be on-hand if you need anything.

Please be aware that unfortunately, due to constraints of the building, the Ritz does not have wheelchair access to the auditorium.
