This newsletter is your guide to New Mills Festival creative events, visual art, and hand made crafts.

Lantern Making & Shadow Screen Workshops

New Mills Leisure Centre, Hyde Bank Road
Saturdays 10th & 17th September
10am-12pm, 12-2pm, 2-4pm
Sundays 11th & 18th September
10am-12pm, 12-2pm

Make your own lantern for our famous Lantern Procession or help create the beautiful shadow screens and paper-bag lanterns that decorate the Torrs Gorge. A team of trained helpers will be on hand to assist you in these sessions.

This year’s theme is ‘Spaces and Places’. All welcome. Children bring an adult with you. No booking required.

Lantern Procession

In case you’d forgotten – the Lantern Procession returns on Saturday 24 September.

The lantern procession takes you through The Torrs Riverside Park, over the famous Millennium Walkway flanked by impressive fire sculptures and a display of hundreds of hand-made lanterns light up the evening.

Bring your very own lantern – made at a lantern-making workshop or buy at The Lantern Procession Box Office from 5pm – just £4 each.

Procession duration approximately 30mins walking – unless congested. Start at The Rock Tavern, Wirksmoor Road SK22 3HW entrance via Jodrell Street ONLY- keep going in one direction.

ENTRANCE BY TICKET ONLY SUGGESTED MINIMUM DONATION £1. Sales are already brisk for the early evening slots.

*Please note the procession route is steep in places and runs on uneven ground.

Join in the celebrations at the Street Party before and after the Lantern Procession. Sample delicious foods from all over the world from authentic ‘street food’ vendors. Enjoy live music and marvel at the fire eaters, jugglers, stilt-walkers and other performers who will be entertaining you throughout the evening. Many of our local shops, restaurants and cafes will also be opening their doors late into the evening. Free entry.

Antiques, Vintage and Craft Fair

Sunday 25th September 09:30 to 15:30 at the New Mills Leisure Centre, Hyde Bank road, New Mills Festival Antiques, Vintage and Craft Fair is back for the first time since lockdown and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever before.

Come and browse, barter, enjoy the banter and grab yourself a bargain. There will be a wide variety of stalls; everything from clothes to ceramics, glass to gardenware, jewellery to jardinieres, candles to curios and everything in between. And there will be refreshments on hand for when you are ready for a bit of tea and cake.

Admission: £1 minimum donation on the door. All profits go to New Mills Festival

Made in New Mills

Made in New Mills is a collection of work for sale by local artists and crafters, including jewellery, photography and textiles, Saturday 10th September 10am to 4pm in the Providence Church, Mellor Road. This is a long standing New Mills Festival favourite, and a lovely chance to admire handiwork, and perhaps find useful and beautiful items for your home, friends and family. Entry free. Refreshments available.

Craft Fair

Saturday 24th September 9:30am to 3:30pm at the Revive Church, High Street SK22 4BR. The Craft Fair is made up of crafters and artists selling handmade items including textiles, jewellery, candles, photography and much more. Free entry.

Cinema at Spring Bank Arts

Bringing the best in world cinema to New Mills Thursday 22nd September at Spring Bank Arts Centre, Spring Bank SK22 4BP.

Licensed Bar and snacks available from 7pm.

Entry by suggested £4 donation

Also a CORRECTION to the musical newsletter. The New Mills Brass Band concert listed on our fringe events is on Friday 30th September. Some earlier publicity material had it wrongly showing as the Saturday. It’s at the New Mills Town Hall, 7:30pm to 9:30pm and the entrance is free. It also features the Chapel Male Voice Choir.
