Classical music retains a strong hold on Fringe audiences whether it is small ensembles or full orchestras.
High Peak Orchestra performs works by Dvořák, Shostakovich and Saint-Saëns. Miles2 string duo play works by Beethoven and Glière, and pianist Julian Davis and clarinetist Emma Tennant join the Bright String Quartet for two quintets from Brahms. Cheshire Chamber Collective performs The Lark Ascending, while guitar maestro Jonathan Prag performs works by two of Spain’s greatest composers, Albéniz and Granados. Meanwhile, soothing fare comes from pianist Adrian Lord performing pieces from his new album ‘Piano Postcards’ and Jon Pickard unveiling the wonders of the ‘harp guitar’.
Keld Ensemble will perform two concerts during the Fringe: one featuring works for string orchestra and clarinet by Sibelius, Grieg and Finzi, and one including works by Mendelssohn and Nielsen along with an arrangement of Weber’s Clarinet Quintet. Award-winning early music group Mr Simpson’s Little Consort returns with an all-Italian programme of music for soprano, theorbo and viols and Fringe veterans the Manchester Recorder Orchestra will perform a wide variety of music for large recorder ensemble. The Belinfante Quartet featuring Henrietta Hill presents two concerts of string quartets, one featuring works of Haydn, the other Ravel, while Partita plays Renaissance and Baroque music for voice and instruments, and Burbage Band presents an evening of great and varied brass music to suit all tastes.
Fringe Marketing Officer Stephanie Billen says: “Working alongside the extraordinary Buxton International Festival, the Fringe presents some remarkable classical performances as part of its huge and diverse Fringe music offering.”
