Buxton International Festival announces big plans for 2024!

After an exceptional 2023 festival, we’re thrilled to announce our 2024 line-up of five highly anticipated operas! Plus, the exciting news that Cuban-British superstar Carlos Acosta will make his BIF debut with On Before.

Opera series announcement for 2024

Verdi’s Ernani

Verdi’s Ernani, a four-act operatic drama, depicts Elvira’s tragic love dilemma involving her lover, guardian, and the King of Spain. Adrian Kelly conducts this BIF production at Buxton Opera House.
Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno
Following Acis & Galatea’s 2021 success, BIF partners with The Early Opera Company for Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, conducted by Christian Curnyn at Buxton Opera House.
Peter Brook’s adaptation of Bizet’s La Tragedie de Carmen
BIF’s second collaboration with Norwich Theatre brings Peter Brook’s adaptation of Bizet’s La Tragedie de Carmen to Buxton Opera House. Brook’s version combines Bizet’s opera and Prosper Mérimée’s original novella.
Ethel Smyth, The Boatswain’s Mate
A new BIF production by British suffragette composer Ethel Smyth unfolds a comedic battle of the sexes on Margate’s seafront, capturing the essence of British summer at the Pavilion Arts Centre.

Joseph Haydn’s La Canterina
BIF’s final 2024 production is Haydn’s two-act operetta, La canterina. This comedic opera promises a riotous show with its typical buffo characters, performed at the Pavilion Arts Centre.
