Derby Museums gives us a glimpse into the fascinating world of automata this winter with an inspiring new exhibition from Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, open at Derby’s Museum of Making until 13th March 2022.
The touring exhibition showcases 30 automata – moving mechanical sculptures – from Cabaret Mechanical Theatre’s collection. Made by 12 contemporary artists, including Paul Spooner, Carlos Zapata, Wanda Sowry and Fi Henshall, the automata range from the humorous to the macabre and everything in between.
Janine Derbyshire, Head of Visitor Experience at Derby Museums, said: “The Museum of Making is the perfect place to celebrate and learn more about this wonderful art form and its makers. There’s something for everyone to enjoy in this fantastic exhibition with mechanisms to make you marvel and lots of hands-on interactives to inspire you to make your own automata.”

The exhibition has been brought to Derby Museums in collaboration with Cabaret Mechanical Theatre; a company that has played an integral role in the revival of automata since 1979 and continues to support a growing number of automata makers. Their visually stunning art, science and engineering exhibitions have been seen by millions of people worldwide.
Opening on Friday 10th December, the exhibition will take place at Derby’s Museum of Making until 13th March 2022. Entry is free for those aged under 16, £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for concessions. The Museum of Making also offers free admission to the exhibition on the first Sunday of the month. Tickets can be booked at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/derby-museums-1585636298, walk-ins will be permitted if there is space.
