Everything you need to know about the Cycle Hub at Derby Arena

Derby Arena’s Cycle Hub is a one-stop-shop for all things cycling in the local area, from using the Olympic length indoor cycling track to leading outdoor rides and hosting children’s birthday parties.

Derby Arena is one of only six velodromes in the UK and takes pride in providing cycling opportunities for the East Midlands. It will host the National Madison and Omnium Championships once again in April, allowing spectators to experience the thrill of the sport too. Derby Arena is a Cycle Hub which encourages people of all ages and abilities to take up the sport, get moving and have opportunities for experienced track cyclists to compete locally.

Derby Arena has indoor cycling opportunities for all ages and abilities. From balance bikes and first pedal classes for young children, women only track sessions, veterans’ sessions, track taster opportunities for beginners, family rides in the holidays and para cycling. You might want to book a maintenance workshop with a mechanic, catch up with fellow riders at Café 42 or share the thrill with a children’s birthday party or corporate package on the track.

If you’re just starting your cycling journey, the qualified and approachable coaches are around to help, and getting your accreditation has never been easier. You can buy a gift voucher, prices vary, or you can book onto the introduction sessions where your bike and helmet are included for free. Alternatively, if you are an accredited rider elsewhere you will simply need to attend a Probationary Accreditation session before you start. Derby Arena also have a cycling kit available if you would really like to look the part.

The Arena runs corporate team building opportunities which are suitable for everyone, regardless of ability. Our coaches will cater a session to meet the needs of your team.

The Cycle Hub offers riders everything they need to get involved with the sport, with the aim being that cycling can be accessible to all. Changing facilities and showers are available onsite for all indoor track riders to access, along with a water fountain to fill your bottle during the session.

Equipment can be hired when booking your session online, as well as from the reception desk on the day. The Arena have helmets that can be used free of charge when hiring a bike, and riders can use their own bike on the track; however, the Arena reserve the right to inspect all equipment prior to use. If you’re looking to use the Arena facilities on a regular basis, there are also various storage options available for personal equipment for an annual fee.

If track and road cycling isn’t your thing but you like the concept of riding a bike, Derby Arena also offer regular indoor cycling classes to help you build your fitness level. More information about road cycling opportunities within the Cycle Hub will be confirmed later this year. To keep up to date with the most recent updates, visit the Derby Arena cycling website.

Councillor Ross McCristal, Derby City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture, Tourism and Wellbeing said: “The Cycle Hub at Derby Arena is a welcomed development for the wider local area and we are proud to be the key location in the East Midlands for cycling. It is an especially exciting time for cycling in Derby as we are currently hosting the British Cycling team as part of a seven-month residency.

“It’s inspiring to watch the elite cyclists, but overall, the Cycle Hub brings community spirit to Derby to unite new and existing cyclists to get involved. We would like to thank everyone for their hard work with the development of the Cycle Hub and we are excited to see new and returning riders make use of the facilities.”
