The Open Call is an exciting opportunity for photographers, curators, artists and collectives alike to get your work seen by an international jury, and to be exhibited as part of FORMAT25. Head to the FORMAT website for more info and to complete your application now!

Below is a link to a recording of the recent Open Call Q&A with FORMAT Director Peter Bonnell and FORMAT Coordinator Jenna Eady. The session answered questions about the application process and gave tips for the best submission practice.

Also included here is a short interview with FORMAT25 Juror Dr Gemma Marmalade who offers tips and advice, and speaks to the advantages of having your work seen through an open call.

CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS, FILMMAKERS, ARTISTS!

For the FORMAT25 Open Call we welcome diverse and imaginative proposals from international photographers, curators, artists, and collectives to respond to the 2025 festival theme: CONFLICTED. Our eminent jury panel of international experts and the FORMAT Curatorial Team will view the submissions and select up to 5 projects – to reflect the monumental changes and challenges of our contemporary society – to be exhibited at the FORMAT International Photography Festival to be held in Derby, in March 2025.⁠

FORMAT Director Peter Bonnell comments: ‘FORMAT International Photography Festival exists to discuss, showcase and celebrate the very best photographic and lens-based media practice from around the world. This 2025 Open Call is a crucial platform for us to be able to support artists, collectives and curators – from the local, to the national and international practitioner – to realise outstanding new projects of work.”

FORMAT25 Open Call: Words from our Juror: Dr Gemma Marmalade

Dr Gemma Marmalade is a British artist and academic in the transformative potential of creative performativity. Gemma is a senior academic and leader in photography at the University of Derby, UK, and a Visiting Professor for the Creative Industries in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Gemma joined us for an interview to talk about the benefits to artists and photographers of getting your work seen through an open call, and offered tips and advice on how you can make your submission the best it can be!

FORMAT25 Open Call Juror Spotlight:

Peter Bonnell

Peter Bonnell is QUAD Arts Programme Manager/ FORMAT Director and was previously Senior Curator at QUAD and a part of the FORMAT team since 2012. His professional curatorial career stretches over 20 years where he has curated, managed and produced close to 200 exhibitions including numerous commissions, residencies, publications and touring projects.

From 2004 – 2011 Peter was Curator at ArtSway in the New Forest, where he also managed a vibrant education programme, plus co-curating with Director Mark Segal the ArtSway New Forest Pavilion exhibitions at the 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011 Venice Biennales. Peter gained an MA(RCA) in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in London in 2004.

Prior to embarking on a career as a curator, he was a practising visual artist exhibiting work in the UK, Europe and in the US. He gained a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from Liverpool John Moores University in 1995, and an MFA in Art (focusing on painting and, specifically, photography) at the University of Arkansas in the US, graduating in 2002. Peter is autistic/ neurodivergent and has a specific interest in exploring opportunities to work with and support other autistic creatives.
