“Artisinal Crafts in the heart of Belper”

In its long history on Campbell Street, ‘the little building with the big window’ which is home to The Cabin of Makers today, has served Belper communities in a broad and always creative range of guises. From its beginnings as a much-loved photographic equipment shop, it was later home to an avant-garde art gallery, before becoming more recently The Willow gift shop and art supplies outlet. In 2022, The Cabin was created – named inventively for its being a place for ‘Crafters And Belper Information’.

Today, The Cabin of Makers remains just that. And having successfully attained Community Interest Company (or ‘CIC’) status, the venture is well positioned to support and showcase artisanal crafts in the heart of Belper, whilst continuing to sell tickets to local events and promote Love Belper and other wide-reaching community initiatives.

A collective of artists and makers now run the venue and its activities; all of whom have their creations on display and on sale, with disciplines including printmaking, textiles, woodwork and jewellery.

“Running the shop as a community of makers opens up so many opportunities to meet and to learn from others,” says The Cabin’s Ali Fisher of The Crafty She-Shed.

“For makers looking to take that first step into retailing their artwork or choosing to focus on it full-time, The Cabin provides a welcomed low-risk opportunity in the heart of Belper in a friendly, supportive and creative environment.”
