Artist profile
Sarah Godfrey weaves stories within the layers of her original prints, echoing her love of historic embroidery and17th century tapestries.
Her family work on the Hardwick Hall Estate in Derbyshire. From being young she has been immersed in the stories of Bess of Hardwick, and surrounded by its collection of internationally renowned tapestries and embroideries, all of which have influenced Sarah’s unique artistic style.
Like the layers of stitches, patchwork and threads, Sarah builds textured layers in her Collagraph prints.
Pressed flowers, leaves, lace, net, glue, plaster, grit, sequins, tissue.
Scrunched, folded, ripped, scuffed, hammered and stuck.
Pushing ink deep into the marks, rolling it onto the surface, creating tone, line, soft, sharp, patterns on patterns.
Inspired by the recent exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery in 2024, Sarah recently recreated the portraits of Henry VIII, six wives. Enticing the viewer to look deeper into the layers of marks, she weaves their stories within.
Sarah graduated in 1997 from Central Saint Martins with Distinction in her Pg/Dip in Illustration.
She has shown work at the Royal College of Art, The Mall Galleries, Westminster Central Hall and the European Illustration Collection.
