Matt Hill

I am a singer-songwriter and freelance creative practitioner.

My own songwriting and music is inspired by the storytelling traditions of folk and country music. I’ve been resident songwriter in a museum, collaborated on songwriting with people experiencing homelessness and have run songwriting sessions in prisons. I’ve performed at Glastonbury festival, the English Folk Expo and on BBC1 television show ‘Flog it’. My songs have been played on BBC6Music and one was even used in a BBC Radio 4 history documentary.

My debut album was voted Americana UK Album of the Year and subsequent releases have gathered 4-star reviews from the likes of Uncut and The Daily Mirror. Previously known under the stage name Quiet Loner, I have performed at music venues and festivals across the UK and Europe.

I’m passionate about the power songs have to engage our memories and emotions and shift our focus to see things from a different perspective. My participatory arts practice uses songwriting as a way to connect with individuals and empower them. I approach sessions with a sense of fun, adventure and playfulness. I combine music, rhythm and creative writing techniques. I love to work with people who would not otherwise be writing songs. I often use themes of social history and culture together with autobiography to create songs people can connect with.
