Artist profile

Katy Doncaster visual artist, creative practitioner, horticultural therapy, forest schools

I am a visual artist working in environmental settings, using craft techniques experimentally, marrying them together to capture the emotion and spirit of wild places. I am interested in the traces of human activity, both domestic and industrial, and how these are subsumed into the landscape.

Based in the English Midlands, I frequently create pieces from being in the forests, coasts, hills and moors of Scotland, North Yorkshire, and Derbyshire hills and woodland.

The resulting pieces – which include talismans, silk banners, installations, and framed, wall-mounted pieces – are unique, unpredictable and highly tactile, with the textures, imperfections and quirks of the processes that I use – pewter casting, print, cyanotype, and the creation of cordage and textiles from plant fibres.

As a creative practitioner of twenty seven years, I have worked with a host of community groups and cultural organisations. I also work in education, teaching art in schools, and working with vulnerable people, as well as being a visiting university lecturer.

I am a forest school leader and horticultural therapist, supporting people of all ages to be in nature, to develop their own creativity, and to maintain mental wellbeing.
