Chamber music for string sextet.

For classical music lovers in the Bakewell area, the Town Hall Chamber Series for 2026 offers a wonderful opportunity to hear some outstanding concerts performed by members of the Hallé, Manchester Camerata, and top free-lancers working all around the UK.

The final concert in the Town Hall Chamber Series is a wonderful programme of works for string ensemble.

Vaughan Williams wrote his Phantasy Quintet in 1912 for a composition award. It highlights his love of both Renaissance English music and folk music. Included in this concert is the great string sextet opus 36 by Brahms – a work full of longing, melancholy and joy in which he enshrines the name of one of his great loves, Agathe, in musical notation. Two other English works will also feature in the programme – a short Fantasia by Purcell, and the expressive and evocative Poem for string quartet by Rebecca Clarke. We welcome back many familiar faces for this Dreams and Farewells concert performed by Caroline Pether and Rosemary Attree (violins) Alistair Vennart and Catherine Yates(violas) with Nicholas Trygstad and Dale Culliford (cellos).

All the musicians performing have commented on how much they love playing in Bakewell. They enjoy the venue, the town and its surroundings, and the very welcoming audience.
