Arts Derbyshire Announces its New Joint Leadership Team

Arts Derbyshire is delighted to announce an exciting new chapter, welcoming Hannah Barker and Nicola Middler as its Joint Leadership Team from June 2026. Together, they bring a dynamic and collaborative approach – blending creative ambition with operational strength – to lead the organisation into its next phase.

This new model of shared leadership reflects Arts Derbyshire’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and resilience. It also marks a proud moment of progression, as two experienced female leaders step forward to shape the future of arts and culture across the county.

Hannah Barker, currently Arts Derbyshire’s Operations Manager, has played a central role in strengthening the organisation from within. With expertise spanning governance, finance, and programme delivery, she has successfully guided complex partnerships and ensured impactful cultural initiatives reach communities across Derbyshire.

Nicola Middler, currently holding the position of Creative Health Producer at Arts Derbyshire, brings over two decades of visionary leadership in the arts. A passionate advocate for creative health, Nicola has built powerful bridges between the cultural and health sectors – championing inclusive, co-created work that improves wellbeing and expands access for all.

Together, Hannah and Nicola share a deep-rooted commitment to Arts Derbyshire’s mission and values. Their leadership will drive an ambitious and people-centred agenda, with a focus on:

Sector Development – Nurturing a thriving, connected creative community, designed to support collaboration, accessibility, and opportunity for artists at every stage.
Creative Health – Growing pioneering programmes such as Creative with Care and Creatives in Place, demonstrating the vital role of creativity in supporting health, wellbeing, and stronger communities.

This moment signals more than a leadership transition – it’s a celebration of progress and possibility. Under Hannah and Nicola’s joint leadership, Arts Derbyshire is set to build on its strong foundations and continue evolving as a confident, connected, and forward-thinking organisation.

Hannah Barker said:
“It’s a real privilege to be stepping into this role at such an important and energising time for the charity. It’s truly exciting to be in a position where myself and Nicola can work together in shaping the next chapter. I’m particularly looking forward to working with artists, partners and communities across Derbyshire, and building new collaborations whilst strengthening the role of arts and culture across the county. Thanks to Stephen’s work, Arts Derbyshire is in a strong position, with an exciting future ahead – full of opportunity, creativity and ambition.”

Nicola Middler said:
“I’m thrilled to be co-leading Arts Derbyshire at such an important moment. Creativity has the power to transform lives, and I’m passionate about growing work that brings people together, improves wellbeing, and opens up access to the arts for everyone.”

Debi Hedderwick, Chair of Arts Derbyshire, said:
“The Board is delighted to appoint Hannah Barker and Nicola Middler as Joint Leaders. They have already made an outstanding contribution to Arts Derbyshire, demonstrating insight, dedication, and a deep understanding of our mission and values. Together, they bring an inspiring and ambitious vision for the future—building on the strong foundations of countywide strategic planning, partnership development, and sector support shaped under the leadership of our outgoing Director, Stephen Munn. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Stephen for his exceptional contribution, which has brought us to this exciting point. We are confident that under Hannah and Nicola’s leadership, Arts Derbyshire will continue to grow in strength and impact, enabling us to truly ‘Connect and Create’ across the county.”
