Beneath Our Feet – Free Textile Installation & Call Out For Local Flax History, Stories, Photographs & Treasures
Event Description
Discover Amber Valley’s hidden flax heritage in Beneath Our Feet, a new textile installation by Derbyshire artist Amanda Haran.
Presented as part of VAA OpenSpaces 2025 – the first global grassroots art trail with only 300 venues selected worldwide – the installation transforms Creative Connections in Alfreton into a sensory space where community, history and creativity meet.
The exhibition invites local residents to contribute to the work by sharing their own stories, photographs, and memorabilia connected to the flax industry, which was once central to life in Amber Valley. During the Second World War, Ripley’s flax factory employed over 100 people, producing parachutes, hoses, and uniforms to support the war effort.
Join us to celebrate and reconnect with this important part of our heritage. Free admission for all.
