Portrait Art Class
This will be the first of Steph’s summer portrait classes. Her portrait sitter for this two hour session will be Steve.
I’m a big believer in the benefits of making art from life. Working outdoors, on location or using models for your source. Which is why I was really keen to put on a few ‘proper’ portrait sessions. It’s all too easy to work from photographs today and in some respect this makes the art challenge a lot easier. But it also makes the challenge a lot more technical, precise and in many ways cold. Having a portrait model sat in front of you will really get you to look, which is never a bad thing. You’ll get to know the sitter during the session, you’ll hear them talking and you’ll really see them so much better. It’s not always easy, but I’ve often found my life drawings just have so much more ‘life’ in them, compared to when I’ve worked from flat photographs.
Do feel free to bring along whatever art materials you feel like using on the day. I’ll also take a bag of art supplies with me, just in case anyone needs to borrow anything. The room is equipped with a sink and will be laid out with tables & chairs. If you’d rather work at an easel, please bring one along. I’ll have a short break halfway through the session for drinks, snacks & a stretch of any tired limbs. I’ll provide some biscuits/cakes, but people will need to bring their own drinks. Or use the drinks machines at the venue.
