What's on

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman

Event details

One of the UK’s favourite folk duos, husband and wife Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman bring a variety of songs and stories, based in tradition, presented in an intimate, friendly style. With a simple setup of guitar, piano and vocals they present an evening of pure emotion, shared experience and sheer joy in what they do.

They have entwined their professional and personal relationship over two decades, delivering assured, distinctive performances that are always bold and innovative, mixing traditional song arrangements with their self-penned material which ranges from bitter to sweet, wry to sad, political to passive.

Kathryn Roberts is held in the highest regard by peers and music fans alike. An early duo career with fellow Barnsleyite Kate Rusby led to much critical acclaim and an award-winning album, with Kathryn being the first singer to win the BBC Young tradition award. This was followed by the formation of the folk-pop band Equation with the Lakeman brothers, one of whom is Sean. After years of successful touring around the world, Kathryn and Sean decided to return to their English folk roots and perform as an acoustic duo. In 2015, Kathryn was asked to join the iconic 70’s folk rock band Fotheringay on their tour to promote a compilation album, stepping into the iconic shoes of the late Sandy Denny.

Whether on stage or in the recording studio, Sean Lakeman is a tour de force of modern folk music. After travelling the world with Equation, he went on to orchestrate the sound of his younger brother Seth Lakeman, producing his most successful albums and playing live in his band on tour, scooping awards and winning fans along the way. His musical services have been called upon by many other leading artists and groups in the recording studio and his production credits include some of the biggest names in folk and folk-rock, including the Levellers, Seth Lakeman, Frank Turner, Billy Bragg, Imelda May, Bellowhead, Rev Hammer and Show of Hands.

Together they are an enviable class act of imaginative song writing and musicianship, twice winning the coveted “best duo” at the BBC Folk Awards (2013 & 2016).

Tickets available Mon to Fri 9:30 – 12:30 on 01663 308202, on the door and online.
