DERBY Season of Light 2022

Event details

September – December 2022

Surtal Arts is proud to announce that the Derby Season of Light (DSOL) is here again and this year it is bigger and better! For all the information you need, please visit our website https://www.surtalarts.co.uk/derby-season-of-light

Thank you to the Arts Council and all our partners who made DSOL 2022 possible.

This autumn using the theme of ‘light’ we’ve planned a series of great family events across Derby and Derbyshire, that is a celebration of our city’s dazzling diversity and creativity. Between Sept – Dec 2022, ‘Light’ is a theme that binds our communities together as we remember Eid, celebrate Diwali, Hanukkah, Bonfire, Christmas and prepare for Chinese New year.

This year DSOL also explores the theme of saris & textiles, and acknowledge 2022 as the 75th Anniversary of Indian Independence.

DSOL is all about bringing communities together, shine a light on emerging talents, and partner with mainstream and community arts organisations/venues to curate and deliver a programme of events that is accessible to everyone.

Whether you want to watch professional artists create amazing new work, or get stuck in yourself with our hands-on workshops, there is something for the whole family to enjoy and bring much needed festive cheer to our lives during this challenging year.

Starting in November, look out for our new feature ‘Lantern Sculpture Trail’ this year that will connect the city centre with the cultural hub of Normanton. Why not come to one of our lantern making workshop and create your own unique lantern and join in our flagship event, Derby Lantern Parade. We are so proud to say that families, children and young people from schools, the University and community play a vital part making our lantern parade colorful and memorable family event. Or you may just want to come and see dance & music performances from across the world, from Chinese Dragon dance to cross -cultural fusion drumming, Dhol-Samba to Bollywood Flashmob to Sufi Music recital at one of our venues and many more across the city and county.

As a lead organisation, with South Asian arts specialism, we always include an element of Diwali arts and craft and storytelling. This year we are taking Diwali arts to places where communities have very little opportunities to experience high quality diverse arts and artists’ work. Check out our beautiful ‘Mama’s Saris’ storytelling performance – a treat for your kids!

We are super excited, we look forward to welcoming you at our events!
