Artist Stephanie Coley will be running another of her fun and popular collage workshops at Hilcote Community Centre, Derbyshire. During the four hour session Steph will share her tips, knowledge and expertise on collage art. People will get introduced to the magical & exciting world of box-art and get the opportunity to play around with and create their own collages. All abilities are welcome and no previous collage experience is necessary.
The workshop costs £35 per person. All art materials and refreshments provided.
If drawing isn’t necessarily your strong point, if you like to collect/hoard ‘interesting’ things, if you’re happy to play and experiment, often without much of a plan, if you like to find your own way, rather than being told exactly where to go or what to do, if you’re happy to explore, to create, then this may be just your thing. Most of Steph’s classes/workshops have a real mix of learners. Some very accomplished & experienced, and some who haven’t picked up a pencil or glue-stick since they left school. Please don’t be scared if you are the latter of the two. Steph will always spend a lot of time with you to hopefully ease you into the session gently.
On the day Steph will look at lots of different ways to use collage in your artwork, she’ll also have examples of her own collage artwork, plus images of other collage artists’ work too. She’ll share some collage do’s & don’ts, she’ll give you plenty of helpful pointers and she’ll also provide a nice supply of her own collage materials to rummage through and use. Think of this fun little workshop as a little journey into the exciting world of collage. Everyone will work very differently; they always do when Steph runs these sessions, but that makes it all the better when sharing your work, techniques and ideas with others.
A word of warning… If you are new to collage, you will be encouraged to see the world a little differently, to collect random things, to not throw anything away… Sorry!!!
Collage art can be hugely dependent upon the lovely collage materials you use and the possibilities are endless. Whether these are lovely old vintage books, photos, cards, or found maps, sheet-music etc. Magazines, flyers, knitting patterns, dress-making patterns, text books and posters. You then have stamps, tissue paper, packaging, wallpaper, wrapping-paper, tickets. Or you’ve got fabrics & textiles. It’s a whopping long list. Half the fun of being a collage artist is hunting out all of your lovely materials, which in turn will make your collage work that bit more personal. For this workshop Steph will provide a few boxes of her own collage materials, which people are very welcome to use. But if anyone does want to bring & use some of your own materials, please feel free to bring them along on the day.
As well as the more conventional paper based collage, you also have the option to go more mixed media and to incorporate other art materials into your work if you want to. Paints, inks, pens, pastels etc. A selection of art materials will be available to use on the day. There will also be scissors, glue-sticks, PVA, a craft-knife + cutting mat. Again, if people want to bring and use some of their own equipment, please do so.
And finally let’s mention box-art. For those not familiar, this is collage that can (not always) incorporate 3D elements. The artwork is often created in a small box or container, hence the box-art name. I will give everyone a small box on the day. You can take this away to create something at home, or if you want to play around with this during the session, have a rummage around, have a think and start collecting any small objects that you think could work in a piece of box-art. I will email everyone with loads of box-art info in a few weeks time, so don’t panic.
Hot & cold drinks will be provided, plus a selection of cakes, biscuits & snacks. If anyone has any specific dietary requirements please let Steph know via email prior to the session.
