Visual Arts

Over the past ten years, Arts Derbyshire has run a series of projects to support visual arts in the county.

In 2003-4, a company called Proboscis was commissioned to undertake extensive research into a variety of possible visual art exhibition venues in the county, aiming to identify whether it might be possible to tour visual art exhibitions to a number of spaces.  Proboscis also undertook action research, curating two commissions of site specific contemporary art works by Lothar Goetz and Hannah Carvell, a tour of a short artists' film through the Derbyshire Film network and touring the pre-existing Lifelines exhibition to a number of venues.  Please see their report (Visual Arts 1) below.

Taking up the recommendations of that work, Arts Derbyshire developed curatorial proposals for a two-year programme of site-specific contemporary visual art for the county.  Please see the report Visual Arts 2 below.

An ambitious three year programme of work called re:place followed, resulting in a series of installations across Derbyshire.  There were two main commissions and nine smaller commissions and bursaries, plus a number of works at festivals.  It was funded by Arts Derbyshire, Derbyshire County Council, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England.  Please see for information about all the work that took place.

Arts Derbyshire was also a partner in a piece of research into visual arts practice across the whole of the East Midlands in 2006-7.  Please see the report from that, Made Visible, below.  Following that research, the East Midlands Visual Arts Network was formed to support visual arts practitioners in the region.  It now runs regular events and conferences.  See

The re:place programme raised the need for a virtual art gallery for the county, so Arts Derbyshire commissioned a feasibility study to set up such a space (see report and business plan in the related documents section). The online visual arts space is called D-Lab.
