About re:place

re:place was a project of the Derbyshire Arts Development Group

re:place was an ambitious two-year curated programme of site-specific contemporary visual arts commissions and installations across Derbyshire of regional and national significance which ran between 2008 and 2011.

re:place had three manifestations:

  • Site-specific commissions – at least two major commissions, four intermediate commissions and four bursaries over two years
  • Non-commissioned programme – this included curating existing work, and touring work in collaboration with partners, including Derbyshire arts festivals
  • Badging and support for artist-led projects throughout the county.

Applications for the commissions and bursaries for 2009 closed in February 2009. The first main commission with Alec Finlay, two intermediate commissions with Kate Genever and Matthew Smith, and three bursaries for The Centre of Attention, Bruce Rimell and Sandarbh UK residency were selected and commissioned.

Additional projects included a commission with Charlotte A Morgan at Chesterfield Art & Markets Festival;  support for two events at Wirksworth Festival - Contemporary Art Focus; an opportunity to meet exhibiting artists and to explore the exhibitions in more detail, together with a panel discussion on Art, Architecture & Modernism; a poetry performance of Alec Finlay’s White Peak / Dark Peak, with Alec Finlay, John Sewell and Judy Kendall; and an exhibition of Kate Genever, Philippa Lawrence and Flore Gardner's work at Melbourne Festival. There was a second call for proposals in January 2010, and the selected artists, announced in March 2010, were the second main commission with Philippa Lawrence, intermediate commissions for Charles Monkhouse and Flore Gardner, and a final bursary to support a residency at the Level Centre in Rowsley for Marc Atkinson, Marianne Holm Hansen, Bob Levene, Tim Skinner and Neil Wissink. Additional projects included Owl Project at the Derbyshire Food & Drink Fair at Kedleston Hall, exhibitions of work by Tom Hackett and Flore Gardner together with a commissioned wall drawing by Chloe Steele at Ilkeston Festival, and a closing symposium at Cromford Mill, where speakers Alec Finlay, Kate Genever, Charles Monkhouse, Charlotte A Morgan, Ivan Smith and Rosemary Shirley explored how contemporary art practice can interrogate, illuminate and reshape the ideas of Derbyshire and of the rural.
