Derbyshire in 2012

There were dozens of projects across Derbyshire in 2012 creating excitement and delight and celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Here are just a few links to show you some of the amazing things that have happened over the year.

Olympic torch 2012

The Torch Relay itself was the highlight of the year. The Olympic Flame passed through Derbyshire on Friday, June 29th 2012.

One of the ways in which Derbyshire celebrated the day was to invite lots of dance groups to perform along the Route. You can see some photographs of this and a video on these links:

Derbyshire's Olympic Milestones As a lasting legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Derbyshire County Council has installed a series of commemorative and celebratory milestones along the Torch Relay route. Read more about this project on the Olympic Milestones project page.

Derby's 1623 theatre company produced a digital manga version of Shakespeare's Troilus & Cressida as part of the London 2012 Inspire programme, following up on their series of Great Shakespearean Workouts 

The English Flower GardenArts Council England ran two open commissions for artists nationally - Artists Take the Lead and Unlimited. Shauna Richardson won the East Midlands commission for Artists Take the Lead and in Derbyshire, The Lionheart Project ( was exhibited at Chatsworth House in May and June 2012. Chesterfield artist Paul Cummins won the East Midlands Unlimited commission for The English Flower Garden.

Follow The Light was a carnival procession following the Olympic Torch in each of the County towns in the East Midlands, including Derby. 

Games Time was a spectacular outdoor stage show combining dance, music, video and fireworks, performed by professional artists and members of the public.

Our final celebration was linked to the Paralympics and was the first County-wide disability dance project, All Dance.
