Derby Theatre branches out across the city

For the past few months; staff at Derby Theatre and the University of Derby, have been restoring and adapting the old Arts College and Metro Cinema building on Green Lane for Derby Theatre.

The University of Derby already own this historic and listed building but it is currently in the process of specifically being restored and adapted for the theatre’s use including housing a working wardrobe department, props store and a number of rehearsal spaces, which will predominantly be available to Derby Theatre. However, in time, it will also be available for use by associate theatre companies and artists too. After rehearsing for two weeks in London; the Charlotte’s Web company moved up to Derby at the beginning of this week to continue their rehearsals in the city and were therefore the first company to use the new space.

Their new Artistic Director, Sarah Brigham; General Manager, Gary Johnson and Vice Chancellor of the University of Derby, John Coyne were at the new site on Monday morning to welcome the company into the building and introduce them to the new facilities and brand new rehearsal rooms.

Derby Theatre General Manager, Gary Johnson said: “We are extremely excited to have acquired the Green Lane building for theatre-related purposes, which will provide us with a secondary base and will be an extension to the work we do over at the theatre. We know how popular and affectionately thought of the building was, and still is, in the city; so we are delighted that we have been given guardianship and the chance to be able to bring it back to life for cultural purposes. The development work is on-going and we look forward to providing updates to the work and restoration in due course."

John Coyne, Vice Chancellor of the University of Derby said: “The University has been delighted to bring part of our Grade two listed Green Lane building back into service as dedicated rehearsal space for new productions at Derby Theatre. The building has created first class studios that will be the envy of the national theatre community.”
