Taking the Lead on Music for Wellbeing

Taking the Lead was an exciting initiative designed to support young people’s development through providing leadership opportunities in and around music making.

The project worked with three groups of young Derbyshire musicians to develop their musical and leadership skills in care settings in their community.

In addition training for Derbyshire’s music leaders was delivered through three professional development days.

The project offered young people various ways to develop - musically, professionally and personally - and was led by Nick Cutts of Opus Music CIC.

OPUS Music is recognised nationally as a leading organisation in developing music in healthcare-setting practice, and Nick has a wealth of experience in working with young people, supporting the development of musical and leadership skills.

Each group of young musicians was partnered with a care setting within their local community, where informal music making was shared with older people – residents or service users – as well as care staff and visitors, exploring mutual benefits to participants’ wellbeing.

Between January 2013 and April 2014 three groups of young musicians and three care homes in Belper, Ilkeston and Staveley were involved in the project.

The project offered older people in care settings an opportunity to listen to and share music, to communicate and interact with young musicians with the aim of enjoyment, relaxation, stimulation and self-expression.

Taking the Lead was an Arts Derbyshire project, supported by Derbyshire County Council and a grant from leading UK charity Youth Music.

An independent evaluation consultant has monitored this pilot project with the aim of producing a sustainable model for further development through the production of a toolkit and full evaluation report.
