Some Like it Hot

Breaking news! Arts Derbyshire receives 4 year grant to take dementia-friendly cinema project ‘Matinée’ county-wide.

Arts Derbyshire Arts and Health project, Matinée, has received a high-profile grant of £175,000 from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Arts Access and Participation ‘More and Better’ Fund. The project will bring the magic of cinema to community locations across Derbyshire for those living with dementia, their carers, friends and family.

Matinee is a scheme making cinema accessible in community locations to those living with dementia, their carers, friends and family. We aim to provide those living with dementia something enjoyable to do during the day, in a positive, friendly and welcoming environment. We make a safe space for people with dementia to come and enjoy a familiar musical, make friends over tea and cake, and enjoy fun activities and chat on the film's theme.

Matinee is an Arts Derbyshire led project, in partnership with Derbyshire County Council, QUAD, Made in Derbyshire, The Alzheimer's Society, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Adult Care and Public Health (Amber Valley and Glossop). We work with a broad range of partners to bring cinema to venues across Derbyshire, including rural locations.

Going to the cinema is a pastime that a huge proportion of the population enjoys, whatever their background or wherever they live; it is a pastime that was a key feature for many people in this age group (60-80+) in their younger years, in a time where it was rare to be able to watch films/TV at home and there were fewer other affordable entertainments. It is also a pastime from a time in their lives which people, even in later stages of dementia, are likely to be able to access mentally.

Here are the dates, venues and films for our current season, 2016 - 2017.  If you would like to be on our mailing list, or find out more about our work, please email MatineeDerbyshire@gmail.com
