Underground back above ground for 2018

Venue group Underground will be returning to the Old Clubhouse for this year’s Fringe to present another curated programme of professional theatre, comedy and music from across the UK, and around the world.

Founded by Buxton locals Tom Crawshaw and Yaz Al-Shaater in 2006, the team first used the upstairs space of the Clubhouse last year, after having occupied the cellars of the Old Hall for eleven years. 2018’s line-up sees 66 different shows performing from noon til night with everything from puppetry to magic, to Shakespeare and shows for babies. Underground will once again be using the Pavilion Arts Centre Studio to host some of their larger work.

Artistic Director of Underground Yaz Al-Shaater said “We are beyond excited to be returning to the Clubhouse in Buxton after a fantastic opening year last July. This year’s programme represents a real step-up in terms of the quality and diversity of shows on offer, and we encourage everyone to come and have a look.”

Highlights for 2018 include fast-rising star Harriet Braine, physical comedy duo The Kagools, Fringe veteran theatre company Sudden Impulse and writer and performer Ruth E Cockburn – all previous Buxton Fringe Award winners.

The venue will be welcoming some exciting new acts to Buxton including comedian Rob Rouse, who recently starred in BBC2’s Upstart Crow and Channel 4’s Spoons, and ground-breaking Irish theatre collective The Corps Ensemble with their new play about the back alleys of modern Dublin – The Fetch Wison.

Undergorund will also host brand new work from a range of popular local acts. Polis Loizou of The Off-Off-Off-Broadway Company brings a newly-written ghost story set in Cyprus – A Curse Of Saints. REC Youth Theatre will return for their 23rd year on the Buxton Fringe, with a newly devised piece entitled Kilter, and there’s music from the past winner of ‘Spirit of the Fringe’ Johnny Dysfunctional, and seasoned local blue country band Good Ole Boys.
