Opening date announced for QUAD, Derby’s New Centre for Art and Film

New centre in Derby will make Art and Film accessible to all.

The opening date of QUAD, Derby’s new centre for art and film, has been announced as 26th September 2008. The iconic £11 million centre, situated on the edge of Derby’s Market Place, will offer state-of-the-art facilities and a dynamic programme that is open to everyone.

Michael Say, QUAD Chairman said, “It is tremendously exciting to be announcing the opening date, after many years of planning and construction. A huge amount of work has gone into the project to ensure that QUAD is firmly rooted in Derby but of international significance.  What is crucial is that the customer experience will be something the people of Derby and the region can really enjoy and be proud of. Given that, QUAD will be a unique asset in further raising Derby’s profile as a centre of excellence.”

QUAD launches with Derby Festé, a celebratory weekend of spectacular events centering around the new venue. During its first opening week, QUAD will be hosting taster events to give opportunity for audiences to see the facilities and programme on offer, and to join QUAD in a ‘housewarming’ of the new building.

The Derby Festé will take place over the weekend of 26 – 28th September. QUAD has been working with Derby Dance and other Derby venues, international artists and local schools to present a dramatic programme of events, including, street processions with Giant puppets, pyrotechnics, aerial performances, live music and film screenings. Full details of the Festé programme will be announced shortly.

QUAD was formed when two well established arts organisations from the city; Q-Arts and Metro Cinema, joined forces with Derby City Council to create a cultural partnership.

With two art gallery spaces to browse, two cinema screens, workshop spaces for community arts activities and a café bar to relax over a drink or snack, QUAD will offer plenty to see and do. There will also be a film editing suite and a digital lab that will host courses for people looking to acquire new skills, and that can be hired out by filmmakers or creative businesses.

The ambitions of QUAD are for it to be an organisation and building that is of local, national and international significance, striving to best serve the needs of the people of Derby and the region and attracting the most significant and important names in the world of art and film and bringing them to the city.
